  5.      This technote describes how you can access one of Quarterdeck's 24 hour 
  6. electronic Technical Support services.  But first, a little background 
  7. information.
  8.      SmartNet is a network of individual Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) that 
  9. exchange messages, questions, answers, and files on a daily basis.  The 
  10. SmartNet Network is not like the Local Area Networks (LANs) that you may be 
  11. familiar with.  SmartNet is currently a three-level network.
  12.      The International/Administrative Host system of the SmartNet is The Sound 
  13. of Music BBS (SOM).  The Sound of Music Bulletin Board System (SOM) is a 
  14. system that brings the very latest technologies to the telecomputing world.  
  15. SOM has grown to supporting over 1.5 GIGABYTES of online resources including 
  16. over 10,000 files available for subscribers of the Sound of Music BBS.
  17.      Regional Systems call The Sound of Music every night to exchange any new 
  18. information or messages that may have been received during the day.  There are 
  19. several regional hubs; each in addition to exchanging information with SOM 
  20. also exchanges information with smaller, individual Bulletin Boards.  The 
  21. regional hubs usually have large user bases.  These systems usually have 
  22. several incoming lines and require a paid subscription for full access.
  23.      Individual bulletin board systems call the closest regional hub to 
  24. exchange messages and information that has been received during the day.  Most 
  25. of them have only one or two incoming lines and many times do not charge 
  26. subscription fees for access.
  27.      By using this method of exchanging messages and information, a message 
  28. left on any one of the BBSes on the network is received by everyone of the 
  29. BBSes on the network within days.  It also allows Quarterdeck Technical 
  30. Support to call one system, currently The Sound of Music, and reach hundreds 
  31. of users with technical bulletins, upgrade information and answers to 
  32. technical support questions.
  33.      The DESQview product support conference discusses DESQview, QEMM-386, 
  34. QEMM-50/60, QRAM, Manifest, and the API programing interface to DESQview.  
  35.      Quarterdeck is not the only company that uses SmartNet as an avenue for 
  36. technical support.  Many hardware manufacturers and software publishers (both 
  37. commercial and shareware/Public Domain) provide support on SmartNet.
  38.      SmartNet is such a good resource for computer users that BYTE magazine 
  39. wrote of Smartnet and the Sound of Music BBS is a "major national bbs network 
  40. and system".  The Sound of Music Bulletin Board System (SOM) is the system 
  41. that Quarterdeck uses to distribute its information on SmartNet.  This 
  42. information is sent to any SmartNet node that carries the DESQview product 
  43. support conference.

  45.      Although you may prefer to contact one of the participating SmartNet 
  46. nodes in your area, the following is subscription information for The Sound of 
  47. Music BBS:

  49.      There are presently two FREE PUBLIC ACCESS NODES to the Sound of Music 
  50.      BBS which can be accessed at (516) 536-8723.  Public access limits 
  51.      downloading to the first 90 days online. Thereafter, the trial user is 
  52.      expected to subscribe to the Sound of Music BBS in one of several 
  53.      categories defined below.  These public nodes are available for accessing 
  54.      all of the conferences of the system.  Many features of the system are 
  55.      only available to subscribers of the system.  The public nodes only 
  56.      support 1200/2400 bps modems.  9600 bps is only available on subscriber 
  57.      nodes.

  59. FULL YEAR SUBSCRIPTION: $50.00/calendar year with full access to all forums, 
  60. doors, conferences and file directories with NO restrictions to number of 
  61. files downloaded with a 1 megabyte daily download limit and a daily online 
  62. limitation of 3 hours per day.

  64. TRIAL 90 SUBSCRIPTION: $25.00/90 day period with full access to all forums, 
  65. doors, conferences and a file directories with a daily byte limitation of 
  66. 500,000 bytes/day and a daily online time of 40 minutes.
